Artist Diary project

27/04/2020

Mimmo Paladino, one of the most recognized Italian artist who usually works on large size painting or sculptures, in this time of reclusion is illustrating the new ‘Divina Commedia’ edition that will be published on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s birth.

DAVID TREMLETT

“Decided to archive and catalogue 45-50 years of work on paper in my storage, it’s such a uninteresting time (outside the media fed info we all have to absorb about this crisis) that thinking about making new work is just a non-starter. There’s a few projects that might get going, when and if, things end, but nothing will be the same again whatever we hope, so let’s hope they get realised!! Therefore something practical and systematic like putting things in order seemed to make sense to me. Thinking and dreaming has been suspended something I have never done. ’It’ will return as being practical and systematic will become even more boring that the current nightmare.
Love D.”

JULIAN OPIE

Here is a sketch of a film/painting Julian Opie is working on. ‘The empty streets have taken on a rather new meaning in the last weeks’.
For Julian Opie art is an imitation of life and few artists ever explored the world through lenses that simplify reality in essential lines and colors like him.
The paradox is that he renders this tragic moment in a flattened abstract style. Opie wants to capture motion in art – this particular project takes us in an imagery walk through the streets of a French Village in this time of reclusion.

IRENE KUNG

“Daydreaming is part of my work process. Dreams enable us to reach great goals and help us in our difficult moments. In my vision they allow us to access intuition, a very powerful emotion that eliminates rationality.

Several people who were locked up for a very long time and in
extremely dramatic ways for political reasons,
wrote that what helped them to survive was
to never stop dreaming about how, after the crisis, they
would run to their best friends…. they would visit
beautiful places they had never been…
start a new project with enthusiasm …. Boccaccio, in “Decameron”, 1353, shows that storytelling is a means of connection and survival, it can give immunity to the brain during quarantine. Ten young Florentines, seven women and three men, decide to escape the Black Death, and to tell each other stories to fend off boredom or malaise. Each person took turns being “king” or “queen” for the day.
In the face of isolation, people embrace storytelling as a way to survive in 1348. In 2020 technology changes, but human responses remain remarkably similar.

JACOPO RICCIARDI

Jacopo”

“During the lockdown we are forced to stay at home and we cannot visit galleries or museum. For this reason I thought about making some digital art works that can be displayed on smartphones (screen-size) and can be shared by email, avoiding physical barriers imposed by the virus.
This is a personal gift and a way to try to use the digital world as a bridge between houses in isolation.

ANTONIS DONEF

Antonis Donef sends for Artist Diary a cycle of 10 works created on old books pages. His systematic sign is inspired by a detail and spreads on the sheet randomly, sometimes with provocative subjects. Donef automatic drawing reflects this moment in which we live a dilated and suspended time.

“My work is a place where past present and future are in the same dimension along with memories, wishes and thoughts. A place of possible freedom!”

PAOLO CANEVARI

“The series of these last works (Monuments of Memory, landscapes, 2020. Exhausted engine oil on paper from an ancient printing page) is based on the use of a material as a starting point for the interpretation of the work. In this case, the stains of waste oil from the car engine, the quintessence of pollution, become by osmosis stains on pages of old books and prints. Mine is a reflection on pollution in a broad sense. The pollution of nature but also that of news and minds. The stain that slowly covers our life and pollutes our daily lives.”

GIORGIO GUGLIELMINO

“Le opere vanno viste dal vero. Torniamo in galleria appena possibile”

Florence”

“I have always worked with gloves and mask and now I feel so strange and comfortable at the same time wearing it not to create something but to protect myself and others around me, those objects have always been part of my creative moments and nothing will change now even if life seems so different from what we knew.
Florence”

CATERINA SILVA

Serge De Vries is a Dutch artist. His small scale oil paintings , almost miniature, are portraits of every day objects. Regardless of the painted subject he is aiming to stimulate an emotion or to represent a domestic atmosphere.
In this project De Vries proposes a corner of his studio in which he carefully positioned a little colored painting surrounded by black and white brushstrokes. A refined and balanced composition with a particular attention to details in accordance with the Flemish painting tradition.

FRANCO TOSELLI

Here is a poem by Franco Toselli.  An extraordinary gallerist, who was able to anticipate some of the most significant artists of the XX century. When expressing himself, Toselli was always able to surprise. Through the years poetry seems to be his favorite language.

ANN-MARIE JAMES

Hanami is the Japanese tradition of flower viewing – specifically cherry blossom. During my month in Japan I was lucky enough to experience this. I was told that every day the newspapers would publish the sakura report, which was expressed as a percentage. When the blossom was in full bloom friends would gather for a picnic under the cherry trees to view the flowers. We can’t gather with friends at the moment but we can all enjoy the cherry blossom.

This watercolour is made with rubber stamps based on Hokusai’s cherry blossom, which I’ll be using to make a series of unique watercolours on Arches paper while we’re all on lockdown. They’re £200 +postage, and as part of the #artistsupportpledge I will support another artist by buying their work for every £1000 in sales.

History reverberates through James’s pictures. James deconstructs images from art-historical heritage, taking them apart until, burying them in a mixture of oil and acrylic paint, we are no longer able to recognise them, or discern them from one another, dissolving their semantic and cultural value.

ALONSO CEDILLO MATA

Alonso”

“Our reality is full of contradictions, so creating internet based images that appear to have aged seemed totally coherent for me. I’ve been making these for one year, and they are keeping me busy during quarantine. Technology has produced a mass acceleration in our world and now there’s no turning back. We were forced into a pause and now we are undergoing a process of global reboot. We need to ensure that this reboot will be for good.
Alonso”

PIETRO PASOLINI

“Deprived of our freedom of movements and interaction we must invent parallel worlds, windows for minds, landscapes where look out to surprise us again and leave the monotony of this quarantine.
Pietro”

Pietro Pasolini through the use of classic materials from the photographic, painting and sculpture tradition has developed a practice that merges the bounders of these three disciplines and explores the essence of being a contemporary photographer today. His work is a visual ode to the beauty and fragility of our planet and intends to accredit the relationship between man and the environment as the most fundamental creative process.
