Liliana Porter è nata a Buenos Aires, in Argentina, nel 1941. Da adolescente ha frequentato l’Università Iberoamericana a Città del Messico, dove ha studiato con Guillermo Silva Santamaria e Mathias Goeritz. Ritornò in Argentina e completò la sua formazione all’Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes di Buenos Aires. Nel 1964 si trasferisce a New York City, dove co-fonda il New York Graphic Workshop con i colleghi artisti Luis Camnitzer e José Guillermo Castillo. Nel 1974 è stata cofondatrice e insegnante di incisione presso lo Studio Camnitzer, uno studio di residenza per artisti vicino a Lucca, in Italia, che accoglie artisti che lavorano su tutti i media. Dopo aver ricoperto incarichi di insegnamento presso il Porter-Wiener Studio, il Printmaking Workshop, il SUNY Purchase e la State University di New York a Old Westbury, Porter è diventata professoressa al Queens College, City University di New York nel 1991. Attualmente vive e lavora a New York.
